Chapter 10

Early on Sunday morning, Katie Mae had arisen and gotten dressed in her navy-blue Sunday dress, complete with her white cape and apron. Even though she rarely went to worship service anymore, she always dressed appropriately on Sundays. She made a fresh pot of coffee and set the breakfast table so that, when she got her father dressed, she could just push his wheelchair to the table and serve him.

“Gut martiye!” She sang out as she knocked on her father’s door. “Rise and shine, Daed!” She opened the door and immediately stopped short. Her mouth opened as she stared at the sight of her father, already sitting up in the bed as if he had been waiting for her. “Daed? What’re you doing?” She hurried to his side and reached over to touch his forehead. “How long have you been sitting there? You could’ve fallen,” she fussed.

And then, to her further surprise, he pushed her hand away from him. He gestured toward the door and, when Katie Mae looked, she realized that he was pointing at his Sunday clothes.

“Oh, Daed,” she said, a sorrowful tone to her voice. “I can’t take you to church, you know that. It’s too hard to get you into the buggy.”

But Abraham gestured again, demanding despite his silence.

With a reluctant sigh, Katie Mae gave in and retrieved his Sunday suit. “All right then,” she said slowly. “If you’d like to dress nice for our day, then so be it.”

Thirty minutes later, she managed to finish dressing her father and had just rolled his wheelchair into the kitchen when she heard a knock at the door. Her eyes flew to the clock and, sure enough, it was twenty minutes before worship normally started.

“Who on earth could that be?” she mumbled as she hurried over to the door.

Nathanial.

He stood in the doorway, his black hat in his hands. “Gut martiye,” he said in a soft voice, his eyes meeting hers and lingering for just one long moment before he glanced over her head at Abraham. “And to you, too, Abraham.”

Katie Mae thought she heard her father make a noise in response. She frowned and turned to look at him. “Well, I’ll be,” she whispered. “Such craziness today, Nathanial. You just wouldn’t believe.”

“Oh, I reckon I would.”

His response made her look at him and she couldn’t help but wonder what he meant by that.

As if reading her mind, Nathanial gave her a sheepish look. “I’ve come to fetch you and your daed for worship service.”

“Excuse me?”

Nathanial nodded. “Ja, it’s high time you got yourself out and about, Katie Mae. I know you’ve been skipping worship because of your daed, but if you want the community to help with his physical therapy, don’t you think it would be wise to have him show an effort and attend worship?”

She hadn’t thought of it that way, but Nathanial certainly made a good point.

“Well then,” she said, and put her hands on her hips as she turned to face her father. “Guess you will be going to worship today after all, Daed.
